Structural Integration (Rolfing) - Bodywork in Madison

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the diference between Structural Integration & massage & chiropractic?

Structural Integration focuses on the fascial system (not individual muscles) and works with three-dimensional soft tissue patterns that limit the body's balance, alignment and comfort. It is a process of gradually and progressively easing the body's strain and integrating the body's segments in an improved relationship to evoke order, support, spaciousness and efficient movement in the gravitational field. Unlike many other touch therapies, SI does not chase pain. It is interested in resolving patterns of compensation, not merely eradicating symptoms.

Massage is a broad term that refers to many styles of bodywork. In general, massage promotes relaxation, detoxifies the body, increases circulation and loosens tight tissue. Some "deep tissue" massage works to release local patterns of structural strain, but this is not usually done as part of a strategy to balance the whole body.

Chiropractic is primarily concerned with freeing spinal joint restrictions and promoting nerve flow to and from the spine. It does not address the soft tissue patterns of the whole body and their influence on structural balance.

While it is most beneficial to allow the SI transformations to take place unimpeded, I personally feel that massage and chiropractic can be compatible and complementary following a 10 Series.

What does it feel like?

The experience is different for everyone. Sensations vary from barely perceptible to barely tolerable, but they are never unbearable. Sensations could include a warm, pleasant release of tension, or at the other end of the spectrum, momentary discomfort. Appropriate pressure will be applied according to your comfort zone and feedback.

Do I have to do all 10?

Deciding whether or not to follow the process to completion is different for everyone. Some clients know they want a whole series of sessions before they begin. Some develop this commitment as they see and feel the effectiveness of the work. A few decide SI is not for them or wish to try another practitioner. I encourage trying one session to see how it feels. Usually clients know within three to five sessions if things are moving in a direction they find worthwhile.

Individual SI sessions can be received to treat acute pain by addressing local adhesions and immediately related tissues while bearing in mind relationships to the whole structure. However, the greatest benefits and long term results will be achieved by balancing and optimizing both structure and function of the entire system. It is important that any structural changes that are induced locally first have the structural support in place globally needed to sustain them. The 10 Series assures for this. Individual sessions focused on current concerns and interests are more appropriate once you have received the foundational work of the 10 series.

What should I wear?

Because it is optimal to have your skin exposed, male clients receive work in brief underwear or swimwear (no boxers). Female clients receive work in bra and underwear or two-piece bathing suit (please no sports bras as they are difficult to maneuver around). If you are uncomfortable with this arrangement please feel free to discuss alternative dress options with me. Please no lotion or oils the day of a session.
